SKI JUMPING IN WASHINGTON
In 2017, John gave Power Point presentations on The History of Ski Jumping in Washington: the Norwegian’s Influence on Northwest Skiing at the Nordic Heritage Museum and the Leif Eriksen Lodge in Seattle.
John helped organize the exhibit Sublime Sights: Ski Jumping and Nordic America, sponsored by the National Nordic Museum and the Washington State Ski and Snowboard Museum, that showed at the National Nordic Museum in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood from April 17 to July 18, 2021.
John wrote a companion book for the exhibit, Ski Jumping in Washington State: a Nordic Tradition
John gave the exhibit’s opening lecture on April 24, 2021.
John did radio interviews about the exhibit and his book Ski Jumping in Washington: a Nordic Tradition with Spokane Public Radio in February 2021; and KUOW public radio in April 2021, and gave a presentation to the Norwegian Commercial Club
John and Kirby Gilbert, historians from the Washington State Ski and Snowboard Museum, moderated a panel featuring Washington’s two ski jumping Olympians, Ragnar Ulland (1956 Cortina Games) and Ron Steele (1972 Sapporo Games).
OTHER WORK
John and his brother Steve have written an unpublished book about their grandfather’s experiences in the Klondike gold rush, using original sources obtained from him – From Cheechako to Sourdough, Mark Odell’s Adventures in the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898. The book includes over 100 pictures taken by his party using one of the first Kodak cameras available to the public. They have given Power Point presentations on Mark Odell’s Adventures in the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898, to the Washington Pioneer Association and the English Speaking Union.
John has given PowerPoint presentations about Early Skiing on Snoqualmie Pass to the Ancient Skiers Association, Seattle Tennis Club, National Nordic Museum, in 2018 & 2019, and the Washington State Ski & Snowboard Museum in 2021.
